On Saturday, our members were taught about proper negotiation. This week’s special speaker was Karyn Corbett, Director of Operations of Cisco Networking products. In her presentation, we were able to learn three key aspects of negotiating: Planning, Preparing, and Position. These concepts can help us learn how to effectively reach the best outcome, satisfying both parties in the process. Mrs. Corbett also gave us some valuable pointers, such as “ask[ing] for more than what you need.” Perhaps most profoundly, she told the group, “You don’t get what you deserve. You get what you negotiate.”
Soon after Mrs. Corbett’s presentation finished, we reviewed the lessons we had learned. Then, we got into groups of two: each member received a slip of paper that complemented their partner’s; the papers had information about their character in a certain scenario, in which these characters had conflicting needs and wants. Following such a scenario, we practiced putting our negotiation skills to the test with one another--having great fun in the process!
The members are so grateful to have heard Mrs. Corbett’s excellent and entertaining speech, informing us so profoundly on how to negotiate. Practicing such skills with one another was enlightening and gave us valuable experience! For the next meeting on 7/23, our club will be hosting a workshop on the Power of Networking, as well as welcoming Shaunna Taylor, a surgical supervisor at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation.
